Jenny Lind Room (1820–1887)

This beautifully curated space reflects the elegance and cultural impact of Jenny Lind’s illustrious career. Featuring her namesake Jenny Lind bed, crib, and cradle, the room pays homage to her timeless influence and enduring legacy. With classic decor and thoughtful touches inspired by her life and artistry, the room invites guests to experience a piece of history in the comfort of the Van Horne.
Known as the “Swedish Nightingale,” Jenny Lind captivated audiences across Europe with her extraordinary singing talent, beginning her career at the age of 11. At 28, she planned her farewell performance for Queen Victoria, who gifted her a gem-encrusted nightingale, cementing Lind’s iconic nickname.
By 1849, Lind was celebrated throughout Europe but remained unknown in the United States. That changed in 1850, when P.T. Barnum offered her a groundbreaking contract and national tour. Thanks to Barnum’s promotions, “Lindomania” swept the U.S., influencing everything from furniture styles to clothing and even paper dolls.
Lind maintained notable friendships with figures like Hans Christian Andersen and composer Felix Mendelssohn. She later married conductor Otto Goldschmidt in Boston and dedicated her life to charity work, including founding a musical academy for girls in Stockholm.
Jenny Lind passed away at the age of 67 on November 2, 1887.
